All Saints Cub Pack took part in the Elsie Barlow Cub Skills Competition held at Bowley Scout Camp on Saturady 21st June 2008 and emerged as overall winners.

It was a good day the cubs all worked together and worked hard.

Most of the skills they were doing we have been doing as part of our programme.

To win it made the day more special as the weather wasn't at its best.

Cub Camp

22 Cubs from All Saints took part in a 2 night camp in the lodge at Bowley Scout Camp at Gt Harwood. They were joined by 16 Beavers from All Saints Mercer Colony and 8 Scouts who slept in tents.
Cubs took part in lots of exciting activities including raft building.
The first attempt was unsuccessful and resulted in the scout leader who was testingd it getting very wet, but cubs redesigned their rafts and managed to build one which held 8 cubs in one go.

Cubs also enjoyed a walk into Gt Harwood via Memorial Park, where they enjoyed a game of football. They arrived back to a well earned chippy tea.

On Monday 31st March, we did some skills based around the Elsie Barlow competition. One of the bases we did was tracking using matchsticks. Tracking is one of the traditional scouting activities and involves Cub scouts leaving signs or symbols from natural materials on a trail or course for others to follow. The cubs managed to pick up on the basic symbols and had a go at each of the signs in groups.

On one of the other bases we did knots which are also a traditional scouting activity. The cubs with Rikki’s help did some traditional knots and seemed to get all tangled up as they learned.

We also did a jumbled up relay as a team exercise which involved a normal race with a twist. The cubs formed lines as sixes at one end of the hall while at the other end Raksha and Hathi were waiting at the other end. As each cub raced up to the leaders they received a word 13 in all they had to put them together to perform a task. The twist was that no two tasks were the same. The cubs enjoyed the activities as there was an element of competition in all the bases they did.

The final base they did was to make up a story each cub added their own piece. The cubs were very imaginative with what they came up with but a very good story was told.

Cubs enjoyed a visit from Hyndburn District Dog Warden , Steve Woods who brought along his dog Woody. Cubs learnt about the dangers of not cleaning up after dogs, hygiene after handling a dog and how important it is to ask the owners permission before stroking a dog.

The Emergency Aid Stage 1 consisted of four bases.

Tracey Shaw ADC beavers helped us with our Emergency Aid Stage 1 Badge.

The first base with Tracey’s help was working with resuscitate Little Ann and the Cubs learnt about airways and basic resuscitation.

The second base the cubs had to learn how to dress a wound and help stop bleeding. They had fun getting wrapped up in bandages.

The third base the cubs learnt what to do in an emergency and how to make a phone call to the emergency services. This involved role play in different situations where they might come across such an emergency. The role play included some imaginative acting from the cubs as they played both injured party and the emergency operator.

The fourth base was dangers in the street and at home and the cubs had to identify the dangers from a worksheet and discuss what they would do.

Due to an excellent turn out, All Saints were able to enter two teams into the competition.

Both teams entered into the spirit of the competition and played very well , with Team A coming out as the overall winners after a nail biting final against St Pauls Oswaldtwistle.

All Saints Cubs will now represent Hyndburn District Cubs at the County Competition to be held in Burnley on the 8th March.
